Them vs Us
What makes Mexican straw hats luxury?
In Mexico, the art of making palm hats is a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. Each state and community has its own technique, its own style, and of course, its own type of palm.
Today, we want to talk about a fundamental difference that is often overlooked in the palm hat industry: the difference between Green Palm and Sahuayo Palm. Many of you have seen the famous "Made in Mexico" label, but there's something important to know: not all Mexican palms are the same.
Green palm is known for its flexibility and lightness. It comes from freshly cut palm leaves that still maintain their natural freshness. Many hats on the market today, including those from international brands, are made with green palm. This palm is ideal for those seeking a light and comfortable hat, especially in warm climates. However, this flexibility also means that green palm is not as durable or resistant, and over time, it may lose its shape.
On the other hand, at Sandoval, we are proud to work with Sahuayo Palm. Sahuayo palm is stiffer and more durable, the result of a drying and curing process that makes it much more long-lasting than green palm. This special treatment gives our hats their firm structure, ensuring they maintain their shape for years without losing quality with use.
Sahuayo palm hats are the perfect choice for those looking for not only style but also resilience and durability. Moreover, with each handcrafted hat, we are honoring a tradition that has been part of our communities for centuries.
Why Choose Sahuayo Palm?
Although green palm has gained popularity in the global market, especially in brands that use the "Made in Mexico" label, it’s important to understand that not everything sold as a Mexican hat is of the highest quality. While many green palm hats are marketed as luxury products, the truth is that they do not have the same durability or craftsmanship level as hats made from Sahuayo palm.
We don’t just bet on the beauty and authenticity of our hats; we are proud to offer a product that respectfully and faithfully represents the true tradition of Mexican palm weaving.
So, the next time you’re looking for a hat that will truly stand the test of time, remember that quality is not always measured by flexibility. At Sandoval, we prefer tradition, resilience, and authenticity. Because true luxury is in what lasts and what it represents.
